Gloucester, United Kingdom – [Hosting Headlines] – Fasthosts, a UK based independent web hosting company, has unveiled new research, based upon an online identity study, which details how website publishing can affect online business image.

The study has determined that nearly half of British consumers (49 per cent) admit to having concerns about how they appear online as a result of personal material placed on the Internet. From those who actively publish personal material online, an alarming 79 per cent admit to now having concerns about their online image.

Mark Jeffries, CTO of Fasthosts Internet Ltd remarked, ”Today, the issue of online identity is clearly a concern for the British public. With it now being commonplace to search individuals online, one should take care to present their own personal online material carefully and keep an eye on their online image accordingly.”

The survey of 1,500 UK consumers also found that 62 per cent of Britons now believe there to be personal material relating to them online, with 1 in 4 people (25 per cent) worried about what others may be posting about them. 1 in 4 (25 per cent) of us now routinely “Google” new people we meet socially. Another survey of 300 people who publish their own personal website, as opposed to just social networking, found that 84 per cent of those believed this offered more control over their online image, and 70 per cent saw their website as providing a better impression than social network.

The ‘Fasthosts Online Identity Survey’ found that around half of the British public now has some degree of concern regarding the issue of ‘online identity’. Significantly, the majority of Britons, 62 per cent, now believe there to be personal material relating to them (such as photos, blog entries, Facebook profiles) on the Internet. 1 in 4 (25 per cent) people surveyed had a specific concern that what others may be publishing may have a negative effect on them. Of those who regularly post personal material online, more than 1 in 3 (35 per cent) have regretted posting one or more items.

Whilst publishing material online is highly popular and enjoyable, some 42 per cent of Britons surveyed recognised that the online image it creates for an individual is something that needs to be carefully managed. The extent of alarm varies according to gender, with 47 per cent of women seeing a clear need to manage identity, in contrast to only 33 per cent of men. The level of public concern on the issue of online material mirrors how heavily Britons now use the web for researching others.

Around 1 in 4 of those surveyed (24 per cent) admit to browsing the Internet in search of material relating to people they meet socially. Interestingly, on a regional level, a staggering 41 per cent of those from Belfast regularly research people they meet, compared to only 10 per cent in Leeds. Overall, 9 per cent of Britons regularly search both potential romantic suitors and new work colleagues.

In addition, personal fears also reflect the swiftness with which Britons judge those they see online. Significantly, 47 per cent of the public have made a judgment on at least one individual based solely on their online personal material. Unsurprisingly, this rose to 78 per cent in those under 25 years of age, who in general spend more time on social networks.

More than 1 in 3 people surveyed (37 per cent) believe that it is possible to make a reliable overall assessment of a person from their personal online material. The need for prudence when publishing personal material can be seen from just how quickly we judge those we see online. Some 29 per cent of those surveyed admitted to regularly judging people online ‘quickly’.

However, it is not all bad news when it comes to how we manage our online image or identity. A further survey of 300 people who publish their own personal website as opposed to just a social networking page, found that 84 per cent felt significantly more in control over their online image using this medium.

Some 71 per cent of people using a personal website, linked to the Internet with their own domain name, believe that their website has given them a favourable online image, and 67 per cent viewed their resultant online image to be overall representative. Significantly, 70 per cent stated that their website has created a more favourable overall online image for them than a social networking page could. Furthermore, 79 per cent of personal website owners were happy to recommend the tool as a means of creating or changing an individual’s online image or identity. The research lends weight to the argument that personal websites can be a useful means to generate or make modifications to an online identity.

Individual personal websites appear to be highly sociable just like social networking, with the average owner being contacted by 11-15 new people per year, and 21 per cent being approached by 50+ new people per year. Of these personal publishers, 65 per cent view their websites as an enjoyable activity, and over three quarters (76 per cent) believe it has made a positive contribution to their lives. In relation to social networks, 68 per cent of personal site owners valued their own sites as allowing more creativity and only 26 per cent suspected that a social networking page could be more communicative.

Mr. Jeffries added, ”With the right approach, personal publishing is an enjoyable and effective way to interact with the world. Our research highlights that personal websites in particular appear to offer a high level of control over online image, and can allow this to be modified effectively.”

Further Fasthosts products include domain name registrations, email solutions (including mobile email services), shared web hosting, dedicated servers, online payment services, reseller web hosting, software-as-a-service and feature-rich broadband packages.
Michael F. Foust, Chief Executive Officer of Digital Realty Trust noted, ”We are continuing to experience strong demand for our Turn-Key Datacenter and Powered Base Building solutions from a diverse base of customers throughout our top markets.

San Antonio, Texas – [Hosting Headlines] – Rackspace, a managed web host, has released a new study, focusing on the support of 2.5 million online votes, from popular television show, American Idol.

Rackspace’s AKQA (www.akqa.com) is the world’s number one digital agency, delivering complex interactive experiences and vibrant customer relationship management, along with strategic consulting, branding and pretty well anything that starts with an ‘e’.

Ben Jones, the UK Technical Director for AKQA explained, ”About five years ago we realized the importance of having the right hosting partner. We had been using internal resources and still operate small managed hosting operations, but as the market has developed we quickly realized that bringing a major project to fruition with the velocity that is demanded and keeping it live 24/7 needed huge resource, massive support and constant monitoring. We do not have the desire to become a specialist hosting company – our expertise is in the creation and delivery of highly successful digital solutions for major clients like Nokia, Xbox, Unilever, Microsoft, Nike, Orange, Sainsbury’s and Sky. At this time we looked at the managed hosting market in some detail, researching potential long-term hosting partners and discovered Rackspace(r). That was four years ago and we have not looked back since.”

The company connects ideas and innovation to deliver award-winning results for the worlds leading brands. A key factor in any online business is the final delivery of the creative work. Even the best digital marketing campaign can be destroyed by slow delivery. An unreliable server or serious bandwidth restrictions due to massive demand, all highlight the importance of having the right hosting partner. The right hosting structure Ben Jones is the UK Technical Director for AKQA.

Further information released by the company revealed, ”The key to the success of the Rackspace / AKQA relationship has been their devotion and adherence to Fanatical Suppor – their mantra and guiding philosophy. Rackspace has become a vital member of our team and we now view them as a critical business partner rather than a supplier, much in the same way as we have operating partnerships with Microsoft, Sun and Oracle.”

Mr. Jones continued, ”Our decision to host with Rackspace has paid huge dividends. They have become a major technology provider and now help us directly with the specification, building and set up of appropriate customized servers, load balancing and secure firewall protection for each client campaign website or online application. World Digital leader relies on Rackspace We work together; experts and technologists detailing and recommending the most appropriate solution for each application. You only have to look at a client like 19 Entertainment to realize the scope and importance of getting this right.”

For the record 19 is acknowledged as the world’s most exciting and innovative entertainment company, led by founder Simon Fuller, with a 23-year track record of changing the way in which the world enjoys and interacts with music, television, sport and fashion, creating massive hits like Pop Idol, the planet’s biggest TV franchise, and guiding the careers of household names such as David and Victoria Beckham and other well known names.

Mr. Jones added, ”Managing and hosting the sites for iconic programs such as American Idol Songwriter were all part of the challenge.” You can imagine the problems behind handling up to 2.5 million online votes for contestants, yet Rackspace remained calm and in control by providing burstable bandwidth for the massive influx of traffic whenever it was needed. This combined with the company’s 1-hour hardware replacement and 100% network uptime guarantee has made Rackspace the ideal managed hosting partner for any operation requiring time and volume critical applications. In fact the company is rapidly becoming the hosting partner of choice among UK and US digital agencies.”

Mr. Jones concluded, ”Rackspace guarantees the levels of service our clients expect from us, which is why I am very happy to say that they have actively contributed towards AKQA attaining the enviable position of being the world’s number one digital agency, and I certainly would not hesitate to recommend them to other digital specialists seeking professional Hosting services.

Doug Loewe, Depth of service and technology MD at Rackspace commented, ”We are delighted to have served AKQA for the past four years and it is indicative of the strength and depth of our service and technology that we have been called upon by the world’s leading digital service agency to provide advice and expertise on the development and management of their online facilities and applications.”

Rackspace delivers a diverse suite of enterprise-class hosted IT services to businesses of all sizes. Customers choose Rackspace for its hosting specialization and expertise, backed by the company’s award-winning Fanatical Support. By integrating the industry’s best technologies and delivering them as services, Rackspace serves as an extension of its customers’ IT departments. Because Rackspace removes the burden of infrastructure maintenance and management, customers can focus on their core business. Rackspace’s portfolio of companies also includes the Mosso (www.mosso.com) cloud computing platform and Mailtrust (www.mailtrust.com) a provider of business-class hosted email solutions.

San Francisco, California – [Hosting Headlines] – Digital Realty Trust, Inc., an owner and manager of corporate datacenters and Internet gateways, has issued a new research study indicating that green movement will grow in importance for datacentre providers.

The Digital Realty Trust survey also finds that vendors need to articulate green datacenter strategies in the next 24 months. ”How Green is Green?” focused on determining the depth of the Green movement in the European datacentre market. The release of this data follows the publication of a parallel study of the North American datacentre market. This European study is based on a recent poll of senior decision makers who are leaders in datacentres or influence significant decisions related to datacentre operations at large European companies.

The surveyed companies come from a wide range of industries, a quarter of which are from financial related services. Key findings from the research study and additional data points are provided below: — 60 per cent of respondents have a declared green strategy. — Firms with green strategy are largely holistic in nature and think their strategy must include both the facility as well as the equipment operating within it. — Datacentre carbon footprints are a key area of concern: over 60 per cent of respondents include the purchase of carbon credits in their overall green strategy. — Less than 50 per cent of respondents require vendors to have a green strategy. — Less than 35 per cent of survey participants know of a datacentre partner with a declared green strategy. The lack of clear vendor strategies leads to leniency. — The need for vendors to articulate a green strategy will only continue to grow in the next 13 to 24 months: over 60 per cent or respondents indicate that this need will continue to increase within the next two years.

Jim Smith, Vice President of Engineering at Digital Realty Trust noted, ”At the same time that we conducted this survey of European companies, we did a study of green datacentre trends in North America. There are some interesting findings that I believe have relevance to the European market. The North American survey indicates that forward momentum of green datacentre initiatives has stalled or even lost ground. The primary culprit appears to be the lack of clear industry standards for green datacentres. European companies expressed similar concern about the lack of clear, practical industry standards, and that could be a harbinger of a similar green ’slowdown’ in Europe. Companies are looking to the datacentre industry for leadership and clarity on how to define, design and operate a green datacentre. The industry must make this a key focus this year.”

A number of additional findings from the research study are as follows: — Respondents feel that there are many potential standards bodies to choose from but there is still no clear leader. The key factor for this is that the definition of Green is not universally adopted. — No clear definition of ‘Green’ exists and multiple components are currently viewed as green. At the moment survey participants feel that coalescence is required around a defined set of principles. Almost 70 per cent see efficient power usage as the ‘greenest’ component. — Being ”Green” will become an essential selection criteria for vendors within the next 24 months: almost 70 per cent of respondents indicated that this will be an important selection criteria in the next 24 months. — Green Strategy is expected to grow as a requirement for vendors in the next 12 to 24 months, forcing datacentre firms to articulate and clarify their green strategies.

Mr. Smith continued, ”Digital Realty Trust takes great pride in being an industry leader in green datacentre design and operations. We are also committed to supporting industry-wide initiatives to increase datacentre efficiency. One of the key ways we are doing this is by sharing energy efficiency data. We are the first company in the datacentre industry to do so, in response to customers and other end-user organizations who are seeking data and benchmarks that educate them about the energy efficiency of competing facilities and about how their datacentre can support their corporate green strategy.”

Mr. Smith added, ”We are also supporting industry-wide green datacentre initiatives by continuing to be an active member of The Green Grid, which is doing excellent work establishing standards and best practices for datacentre energy efficiency. We will continue to be a leader in applying LEED and BREEAM specifications to our building design and operations. Although these specifications are not designed specifically for datacentres, they have tremendous value for institutional building owners like Digital Realty Trust. These specifications provide a holistic view of how buildings impact our environment and a proven methodology for minimizing that impact.”

Digital Realty Trust will also hosted a webinar about the results of the green datacentre trend studies. The Webinar was conducted by Bernard Geohegan, Vice President, Europe, who provided additional data and analysis of the trends.

The Methodology Metrics reported in this study are based on web-based surveys of IT decision makers at large corporations in five European countries: the U.K., Germany, France, the Netherlands and Ireland. Almost 100 per cent of all surveyed companies have annual revenues greater than 1 billion Euros. 69 per cent of them have 5000 or more employees worldwide and 52 per cent over 7500. All surveyed organisations are ”leaders” in setting industry direction based on expense related to datacentre design and construction. Approximately 60 per cent of the respondents were Managing Directors and almost 13 per cent are ”C” level executives. The survey was conducted in March 2008.

Digital Realty Trust, Inc. owns, acquires, redevelops, develops and manages technology-related real estate.

San Antonio, Texas – [Hosting Headlines] – AT and T Inc., a web hosting provider, Internet services and ISP company, has reported positioning from industry analyst firm, Gartner Inc., in its 2008 Leaders Quadrant for Web Hosting Services.

Gartner’s ”Magic Quadrant for North American Web Hosting, 2008,” authored by L. Leong, T. Chamberlin, includes .AT and T Inc.’s Hosting and Application Services. This new positioning for AT and T comes on the heels of a Gartner ”Magic Quadrant Report for U.S. Network Service Providers, 2008,” which also placed AT and T in the Leaders Quadrant.

With 38 Internet data centers (IDCs) connected to its global Internet Protocol (IP) network, AT and T is the industry’s largest network provider of hosting services. In its North American Web Hosting Magic Quadrant Report, Gartner evaluates AT and T’s vision and ability to execute in categories that analyzed in part current and future market direction, innovation and customer needs.

AT and T’s leadership in hosting services is being driven by an ongoing strategy to extend its global network reach and capacity, globalize its portfolio of business services and embed the latest utility-computing and other managed hosting technologies so that companies can deliver real-time applications to their employees, customers, suppliers and partners. A portion of AT and T’s recently announced $1 billion investment in its global network will be used to increase its data center hosting capacity by 180,000 square feet through mid-2009. Expansion targets in 2008 will include Singapore, Amsterdam, Boston and Dallas.

Steven Caniano, Vice President, AT and T Hosting and Application Services noted, ”We think AT and T’s position in the Leaders Quadrant in this latest Gartner Web Hosting Magic Quadrant report reflects our commitment and ability to serve our customers worldwide with the most advanced managed services offerings, applications support and Internet data center facilities available today. To maintain our position in the Leaders Quadrant, we will continue to focus on serving our customers to meet their business needs and on enhancing our infrastructure and portfolio of offerings.”

Earlier this year, AT and T reinforced its leadership position in the managed hosting space by striking an agreement with SAP America Inc. Under this contract, AT and T will serve as a primary SAP hosting partner, providing independent hosting services for business customers with headquarters in North America. By combining AT and T’s global IP network and hosting and applications services capabilities with SAP’s global expertise in enterprise software, businesses will receive simplified full-service solutions that will allow them to deliver critical applications to their end-users.

The Magic Quadrant is copyrighted 2008 by Gartner, Inc. and is reused with permission. The Magic Quadrant is a graphical representation of a marketplace at and for a specific time period. It depicts Gartner’s analysis of how certain vendors measure against criteria for that marketplace, as defined by Gartner. Gartner does not endorse any vendor, product or service depicted in the Magic Quadrant, and does not advise technology users to select only those vendors placed in the “Leaders” quadrant. The Magic Quadrant is intended solely as a research tool, and is not meant to be a specific guide to action. Gartner disclaims all warranties, express or implied, with respect to this research, including any warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose.

AT and T Hosting and Application Services provides a variety of hosted infrastructure, managed services and managed applications capabilities that support the IT operations of customers ranging from small and midsize businesses up to the largest global corporations. Customer applications enabled by AT and T include corporate Web sites, e-commerce, digital content delivery, multiplayer online gaming, collaborative intranets and extranets, data backup and recovery, and enterprise resource planning (ERP), among other services.

AT and T Inc. is one of the world’s largest telecommunications holding companies and is the largest in the United States. Operating globally under the AT and T brand, AT and T companies are recognized as the leading worldwide providers of IP-based communications services to business and as leading U.S. providers of high speed Internet, local and long distance voice, and directory publishing and advertising services.

New York, New York – [Hosting Headlines] – Tier1 Research (T1R), a New York-based independent research firm, released a new report that analyzes financial implications of developments affecting recent trends and future directions for the managed hosting sector.

Analysts at Tier1 Research (T1R) find in a new report that the managed hosting sector has experienced tremendous growth in the past 12 months – in excess of 30% – driven by several trends. These trends include virtualization, business continuity services and security technologies, driven both by enterprise demand and regulatory compliance.

Despite the dipping economy in the US, there has been increased managed hosting adoption by SMBs and mid-tier enterprises in both the US and Europe. Rackspace, Savvis, AT and T and Verizon Business have been the biggest beneficiaries of this market growth, being the clear leaders in the managed hosting sector. These findings are contained in a report released today by New York-based T1R, an independent research firm that analyzes the financial and industry implications of developments affecting public and private companies within the hosting, IT, communications and Internet sectors.

Antonio Piraino, Senior Analyst at T1R and author of the report noted, ”There will be continued jockeying and consolidation in the managed services sector as larger storage companies continue to eat up smaller backup-and-recovery service offerings, and encroach more on the territory of managed hosters. Similarly, virtualization, security, compliance, virtual computing and storage, and international expansion will all drive expenditure in the next year.”

The ‘Managed Hosting: Market Overview Spring 2008′ report is part of a series of quarterly reports designed to provide timely analysis and perspective on key technology trends and developments in the managed hosting marketplace. T1R analysts find that managed hosting providers have had to broaden the scope of services offered over the course of the past year, and 2008 looks to be no different.

Key areas of focus for the market include SaaS hosting and continued adoption of platforms serving as both exchange point and facilitator of new online services. Several new technologies and emerging service lines will also play a strong role in the growth of the managed hosting sector. Virtualization technology will be a key aspect of such offerings, as will the ability for customers to obtain such services in an on-demand manner.

Utility storage and computing services will show strong growth, with new competition coming from established managed hosting providers like Savvis and Rackspace. Some of the other trends transforming the industry today include e-discovery services, managed messaging and IM, managed VoIP, managed databases and managed application services such as SAP (and other ERP and CRM approaches), and new dashboards and operating consoles enabling customers to partake much more proactively in new provisioning and trouble-ticket creation. These advancements are not only coming from the managed hosting sector, as there is additional pressure coming from the mass-market hosting sector, as well as the traditional technology suppliers in this space.

This 55-page report, titled ‘Managed Hosting: Market Overview Spring 2008,’ includes a summary of the major events and trends shaping the managed hosting sector in 2008 and provides market-share data on the top public and private players in the market, as well as updated forecasts for 2008 revenues.

Key Companies Covered The report covers the key public and private companies in the managed hosting market, including AT and T, Savvis, Rackspace, SunGard, Terremark, ViaWest, Peak 10 and OpSource.

T1R, a division of The 451 Group, is headquartered in New York. The company analyzes the financial and industry implications of developments affecting public and private companies within the IT, communications and Internet sectors – with a particular focus on hosting, Internet infrastructure and IT services. Clients include institutional investors and technology vendors, along with end users and venture capitalists. The clients leverage T1R’s analytical insight for idea generation, trend identification, due diligence and grounded opinions, as well as metrics and forecasts on companies and industries covered.

Authored by Gartner analysts Ted Chamberlin and Lydia Leong, the new 2008 report can be accessed from SAVVIS’ web site. According to Gartner, vendors listed in the ”Leaders” quadrant ”have proven they have staying power in this market, can frequently innovate upon their existing products, and can be relied on for enterprise hosting needs. They have proven their technical competence and ability to deliver services to a wide range of customers.”

The Gartner Magic Quadrant is widely recognized as one of the most influential benchmarks for enterprises seeking to evaluate hosting services. It evaluates vendors according to completeness of vision – including product line breadth and functionality, successful implementations, and the ability to meet customer requirements now and in the future – as well as the ability to execute, which includes breadth and depth of services, quality of operations and overall viability, among other criteria.

Since the publication of the last North American Web Hosting Magic Quadrant, SAVVIS has advanced and expanded its hosting services delivery platform and operational support systems to deliver enterprise hosting throughout North America, Europe and Asia. SAVVIS currently operates 29 data centers globally encompassing more than 1.4 million square feet of high-quality space designed to support business and governmental IT operations.

Phil Koen, Chief Executive Officer of SAVVIS noted, ”We are pleased to announce that we have secured what we believe is an important spot in the North American Web Hosting Magic Quadrant and feel it reflects our leadership position in the industry. Going forward, we are focused on improving our customers’ IT experience and support systems, and are committed to further innovation in our hosting services delivery platform.”

SAVVIS offers customers a variety of flexible and cost-effective hosting models that can easily be mixed and interchanged to meet the specific needs of an enterprise. Those models range from unmanaged colocation services all the way to fully managed, virtualized utility services that provide maximum performance and cost-savings benefits, while requiring only a fraction of the data center floor space required for colocation. SAVVIS solutions enable clients to improve the performance and security of their IT systems, lower the cost of their IT operations and become more agile by scaling their IT infrastructure up or down as business needs change.

Market demand for hosting services continues to expand. Gartner forecasts that the North American Web hosting market will grow from $8.8 billion in 2005 to $21.4 billion in 2011. This according to Dataquest Insight: Web Hosting, North America, 2005 – 2011, published November 12, 2007, and authored by Gartner analyst Lydia Leong.
