Palo Alto, California – [Hosting Headlines] – VMware, Inc., a virtualization solutions firm, has reportedly helped to defray costs for customers in the amount of 39 billion kilowatt hours of electricity, which amounts to over the power that is used annually to heat and cool the country of Denmark.

Stephen Herrod, Chief Technology Officer, VMware noted, ”Most servers and desktops today are still consuming 70-80 per cent of their rated power even when idle. VMware is able to deliver substantial power and cost savings through innovative power management capabilities in our virtualization solutions that safely power down or throttle servers when not in use. By powering down servers and desktops during inactive periods such as evenings or weekends, we can help customers save another 25 per cent or more on power consumption without affecting applications or users.”

The virtualization solution firm for desktops to datacentres, reports that by using its virtualization, customers can consolidate 10 or more physical machines onto a single server and reduce power consumption and cost by 80-90 per cent. VMware customers that have moved from a 1:1 application to server ratio to 60:1 or higher have achieved millions of dollars in capital and operational savings.

For every server virtualized, customers can save about 7,000 kilowatt hours (kWh), or four tons of CO2 emissions, every year. VMware has virtualized more than 6 million server workloads since 1998, resulting in an estimated energy savings of nearly 39 Billion kWh, or roughly US4.4 billion. This is roughly equivalent to the total energy consumption of Denmark for one year. PCs virtualized and hosted on servers in the datacentre can also reduce power consumption and cost by 35 per cent. Hosting desktops in the datacentre also doubles the replacement cycle of PCs or thin clients, reducing the environmental impact associated with manufacturing new equipment.

Since 2006, VMware has been an active pioneer inworking with utility companies to offer incentive programs supporting virtualization projects in datacentres. VMware works with utilities across North America including Pacific Gas and Electric, Southern California Edison, SDG and E, BC Hydro and Austin Energy to provide customers incentives based on the amount of energy savings achieved through datacentre consolidation.

Sheffield Hallam, one of the UK’s most innovative and progressive universities with more than 28,000 students and over 5,000 staff, required a number of new IT services to support its user community. This led to the number of servers within the datacentre doubling within twelve months. The building’s electricity grid could not supply enough power to reliably support the required number of servers within the main datacentre, and physical space was also a major issue. Sheffield Hallam is using VMware’s market-leading datacentre virtualization and management platform, VMware Infrastructure 3, to reduce power and cooling requirements in the datacentre and improve the delivery of IT services. VMware Infrastructure 3 provides the capability for automatic load balancing, business continuity and power management and the ability to move a virtual machine across physical machines to minimize service interruption.

Dave Thornley, service support manager, Sheffield Hallam University remarked, ”With the server farm growing towards capacity, we knew a completely new strategy was required. We decided that moving to a virtual infrastructure would be the most effective way to tackle cost management and space issues. Using VMware, we have made a huge impact on our power bills as well as leading to major savings in the deployment of new services to users.”

VMware (NYSE: VMW) is the global leader in virtualization solutions from the desktop to the datacentre. Customers of all sizes rely on VMware to reduce capital and operating expenses, ensure business continuity, strengthen security and go green. With 2007 revenues of $1.3 billion, more than 100,000 customers and nearly 14,000 partners, VMware is one of the fastest growing public software companies. VMware is headquartered in Palo Alto, California and on the web at www.vmware.com. VMware Canada is headquartered in Burlington, Ontario.

Renton, Washington – [Hosting Headlines] – Parallels’ Virtuozzo Containers, a server virtualization firm formerly known as SWsoft, have been chosen to power managed hosting provider, Liquid Web’s new Microsoft Windows virtual private server (VPS) offering.

The offering will be delivered from Liquid Web’s two fully owned and operated mid-western datacenters. This represents an expanded partnership with Parallels, who already supplies Liquid Web with Parallels Plesk Control Panel software, which is bundled with all Windows dedicated server offerings.

Serguei Beloussov, CEO of Parallels noted, ”We are pleased that Liquid Web has selected Parallels Virtuozzo Containers and the Parallels Open Platform for this important new offering and that our two companies are deepening our partnership. Parallels Virtuozzo Containers offers the highest levels of density, manageability and scalability, which makes it an ideal solution for datacenter owners who want to offer a wide variety of fully managed services.”

Parallels Virtuozzo Containers includes the Parallels Infrastructure Manager, a robust set of management tools that helps Liquid Web personnel deliver its ”Heroic Support,” which has become a trademark of their services. Using the Parallels Infrastructure Manager and Parallels Plesk control panel software, Liquid Web can offer their customers a control panel for adding software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications as well as the ability to scale the size of their VPS.

Liquid Web takes advantage of the Parallels Virtuozzo Containers’ architecture to offer burstable memory for example, temporarily adding more memory to a container during a short period of high activity, so clients may have access to more server resources than they actually pay for. The architecture provides this capability while guaranteeing minimal levels of service so clients never have less memory than they contract for.

Travis Stoliker, Marketing Director of Liquid Web commented, ”Our VPS offerings give a significant competitive advantage over hypervisor-based solutions. The high density, reliability, power savings, and management tools of Parallels Virtuozzo Containers allow us to provide our customers with more attractive offerings.”

Parallels Virtuozzo Containers is the world’s leading operating system (OS) virtualization solution. On a single physical server and single OS installation, it enables users to run workloads in multiple, simultaneously running execution environments called ”containers.” Compared to other virtualization technologies, Parallels Virtuozzo Containers offers the highest levels of density, performance and manageability.

The Parallels Open Platform enables hosting with Parallels virtualization and automation technology through integration with a wide range of third-party applications and systems. The Application Packaging Standard (APS), a key element of the platform, is used by independent software vendors (ISVs) and service providers to seamlessly integrate applications to offer to the more than 10 million businesses and individuals that use Parallels products.

Liquid Web Inc. is a privately held company founded in 1997, with two wholly owned data center facilities located in Lansing, Michigan. Liquid Web is a leader in the professional web hosting market with an unwavering dedication to providing the best hosting products available. Liquid Web has over 130 employees to service 15,000 clients in over 100 countries. The company has assembled a world class heroic support staff who are professionally educated and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Parallels (formerly SWsoft) is a worldwide leader in virtualization and automation software that optimizes computing for consumers, businesses, and service providers across all major hardware, operating systems, and virtualization platforms. Founded in 1999, Parallels is a fast-growing company with 900 employees in North America, Europe, and Asia.

Renton, Washington – [Hosting Headlines] – Parallels’ Desktop for Mac solution, a server virtualization firm, has sold more than one million copies, as the first product designed to enable the ability to run Windows, Linux or any other operating system and critical applications simultaneously with Mac OS X.

Serguei Beloussov, CEO of Parallels noted, ”Parallels Desktop not only broke down the barrier between the Mac and PC worlds, it also broke down the barrier that kept desktop virtualization from becoming a mainstream technology for consumers and professional users. We will continue innovating to extend our position as the desktop virtualization leader and provide our users with the fastest, easiest and most seamless solution available.”

Since its launch in June 2006, Parallels Desktop for Mac has been recognized with more than 30 major industry awards, including: MacWorld Magazine’s ”Editor’s Choice” Award (the ”Eddy”); PC World Magazine’s ”Innovation of the Year” Award; ”Best in Show” at the 2007 MacWorld Expo and at the 2007 London MacLiveExpo; BBC News ”Best Tech”; and InfoWorld 2008 ”Technology of the Year.”

Parallels Desktop for Mac’s success has quickly made Parallels the No. 1 company in desktop virtualization. Today, the software is available in 10 languages – Chinese, Czech, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, and Spanish.

Frank J. Bernhard, Managing Principal and technology economist with OMNI Consulting Group remarked, ”Parallels Desktop for Mac fundamentally shifted the Apple strategy from monolithic to multiplatform. It empowers Mac users with a new level of flexibility and gave them access to enterprise applications that were previously out of reach. The ability to operate business applications with complete transparency between the Windows and Mac platforms via Parallels Desktop is the coup that Macintosh users have been enjoying since the evolution of Intel architecture, and is one of the main catalysts behind enterprise Mac adoption.”

Currently, Parallels Desktop for Mac is in its third generation and is the world’s No. 1 selling Mac system utility. The product has introduced a string of industry firsts and innovative features:

SmartSelect is a Parallels-exclusive feature that allows users to open any file from Windows or OS X with any program from either operating system. This feature provides the most integrated experience possible.

Coherence is a Parallels-first feature that enables users to run Windows applications just like they were native Mac applications. When a Windows application runs in Coherence, only the Windows application is visible, providing a completely seamless user experience. Windows applications can be launched from the Mac dock, and individual Windows applications windows work with OS X’s Expose feature.

Parallels Transporter is a free migration tool, bundled with every copy of Parallels Desktop for Mac, that helps users migrate entire Windows or Linux PCs – including the operating system, settings and software applications – to Parallels virtual machines in minutes without losing data. This tool is key for those switching from PCs to a Mac.

Parallels Desktop for Mac was also the first virtualization solution to offer support for DirectX and OpenGL 3D graphics. A complete overview of features and functions is available at www.parallels.com/products/desktop.

Parallels Desktop 3.0 for Mac is available for purchase online at www.parallels.com/buyonline, and boxed copies are available at the Apple Store, Amazon.com, CompUSA, Fry’s Electronics, MicroCenter, Office Depot, Staples, select Best Buy locations, and hundreds of other retailers nationwide. The standard retail price (SRP) of Parallels Desktop 3.0 for Mac is $79.99.

New users are also welcome to download and test a free, fully-functional copy of Parallels Desktop 3.0 for Mac for 15 days. The trial product and documentation is available at www.parallels.com/download/desktop.

Houston, Texas – [Hosting Headlines] – R1Soft, a developer of near-continuous data protection products for Linux and Windows, has released a new version of its CDP Server product that introduces a quick and easy Windows Server restore, using Linux Live CDs.

R1Soft’s new Bare-Metal Restore process does not require Windows Pre-Execution or Remote Installation Services and is a first of its kind. R1Soft provides its customers a bootable Linux Live CD ISO image compatible with most popular Windows Server storage and network devices. Administrators can initiate a restore by simply inserting the CD, powering on, and then selecting a point-in-time virtual full backup to restore from in the R1Soft CDP Server web interface.

David Wartell, Vice President of R1Soft, a subsidiary of BBS Technologies noted, ”Bare-Metal Restore has been a real thorn in the side of software makers when it comes to Windows servers. It has proven difficult to boot Windows without using a hard disk for restore. Windows PE, for example, requires a separate Windows license for every instance that is booted and is very complicated and time consuming just to get it to work. The nearest alternative is RIS, and that can take days to get working, especially in a large data center. With our new release of CDP for Windows, we have finally solved the problem. Bare-Metal Restores on Windows servers from disk backups can now be completed by simply inserting a CD in the tray.”

Previously, before any data could be restored, Windows server administrators had to first re-install the Windows operating system and any backup software. Recent Bare-Metal Restore alternatives, such as products released by vendors like Symantec, IBM, and EMC, still require the customer to use either the Windows Pre-Execution Environment (Windows PE) or Windows Remote Installation Services (RIS) during restores. Windows RIS and PE can be complicated processes and these systems add hours of wasted time during a critical server restore.

R1Soft also supplies media and configurations for DHCP and TFTP servers to allow Windows Server restore over the PXE network boot protocol supported by all modern network interface cards. R1Soft has previously been offering Bare-Metal Restore in its CDP for Linux product.

Recently, R1 Soft showcased its products and True Granular Restore technology at this year’s MySQL Conference and Expo, held April 14-17 in Santa Clara, California. At the largest gathering of MySQL developers, users, and database administrators. This year’s show provides an opportunity for R1Soft to educate the MySQL community about its Continuous Data Protection software for MySQL database servers. R1Soft’s database backup technology, True Granular Restore, is the first of its kind for MySQL, allowing developers and administrators the ability to restore individual tables to original or alternate locations using an easy-to-use web interface.

Renton, Washington – [Hosting Headlines] – Parallels, a server virtualization firm, has selected IT products distributor, Tech Data Corporation, as its exclusive U.S. distributor for Parallels Virtuozzo Containers.

Following Parallels’ channel program offering value-added resellers (VARs) access to container-based server virtualization software, distribution of Parallels Virtuozzo Containers will be managed by Tech Data’s Advanced Infrastructure Solutions (AIS) Division, which provides VARs with specialized sales and technical support for virtualization solutions.

Bill Portin, Vice President of North American sales and operations, Parallels noted, ”Parallels Virtuozzo Containers takes a different approach to server virtualization than many of the other solutions available in the channel, and by doing, so offers enterprises large and small a unique set of advantages, such as better per-server density and superior performance. This makes Parallels Virtuozzo Containers an ideal solution for VARs deploying data center-scale virtualization or for those deploying virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) solutions. Working with Tech Data’s AIS Division, Parallels will ensure our VAR partners have access to the support, expertise and information they need to profitably deploy Parallels Virtuozzo Containers.”

Parallels Virtuozzo Containers is the world’s leading operating system (OS) virtualization solution. On a single physical server and single OS installation, it enables users to run workloads in multiple, simultaneously running execution environments called ‘containers’. Compared to other virtualization technologies, Parallels Virtuozzo Containers offers the highest levels of density, performance and manageability.

Amy Belcher, Director of product marketing, Advanced Infrastructure Solutions at Tech Data remarked, ”Tech Data’s AIS Division has built one of the channel’s most robust data center solution offerings that includes the broadest virtualization practice of any distributor. The addition of Parallels Virtuozzo Containers provides our VAR customers with more options as they develop and deploy server virtualization solutions for a wide range of end-user environments and business-enhancing applications. Parallels has a strong commitment to the channel, and we’ll work closely with them to help our VAR partners build profitable and successful virtualization practices.”

VARs can leverage Parallels Virtuozzo Containers to enhance and deploy a wide range of IT solutions, including:

Server and Operating System Consolidation – Parallels Virtuozzo Containers superior density enables customers to consolidate multiple physical servers to fewer servers that run multiple instances of the same operating system.

Business Continuity – New features such as real-time backup and live migration enable cost-effective disaster recovery and high-availability configurations that ensure continuous business operations.

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) – Industry-leading density and performance make Parallels Virtuozzo Containers the best solution for deploying VDI enterprise-wide.

Workload Management – The unique ability of Parallels Virtuozzo Containers to manage applications and allocate resources in real-time – in response to changing user needs – delivers maximum efficiency, productivity and uptime.

Application Hosting for SaaS (Software as a Service) Deployments – Because each container is lightweight and can be deployed in seconds, Parallels Virtuozzo Containers is an ideal solution for businesses looking to capitalize on SaaS both internally and externally. Parallels has a robust ISV and partner community working on SaaS solutions and is spearheading the Application Packaging Standard, which drives rapid SaaS deployment of applications.

Basking Ridge, New Jersey – [Hosting Headlines] – Verizon Business, a web host and internet solutions firm has launched a new managed security service, to assist organizations to better protect total IT infrastructure.

The offering was developed to defend against increasing threats to business applications. From the network to the end- user, Verizon Business will offer enterprise customers a better way to protect their software and web applications that underlie critical business processes. The new Application Log Monitoring and Management Service will augment Verizon Business’ Managed Security Services (MSS) portfolio, which helps deliver end-to-end protection of an organization’s entire IT ’stack’ — the computing structure that includes the network, data, application and user layers).

The new service enables customers to efficiently log, track and analyze user and system activity of software and Web applications, operating systems, and Web and database servers while avoiding the cost and complexity of building, maintaining and monitoring an in-house log management infrastructure. The Application Log Monitoring and Management Service will be available in the U.S. and many countries around the world, beginning next month. The new offering enables users to better mitigate risk, control IT costs, reduce complexity, and automate security compliance initiatives. As a result, customers can react more quickly to security threats, gain speedy access to critical information, and facilitate security compliance audits.

Counse Broders, Senior Research Director, Current Analysis noted, ”Verizon Business continues to deliver on managed security solutions for its clients with a nuanced log monitoring and management service extended to applications that will help clients better deal with compliance and regulatory requirements while gaining 24 x 7 expertise. Verizon Business’ new service moves security further up the IT stack to the application level, helping to drive the industry forward.”

With one of the world’s most expansive IP networks, Verizon Business has a unique view into the global security threat landscape. Customers can rely on Verizon Business’ expert security capabilities and advanced analysis to provide visibility into — and the ability to mitigate — new and emerging threats that may affect a business.

Kerry Bailey, Vice President of Verizon Business Security Solutions noted, ”Today’s approach to security is holistic. Gone are the days of relying solely on network-layer security to protect information assets. As the leading global provider of managed information security solutions and operator of one of the world’s most expansive IP networks, we are well- positioned to secure our customers’ infrastructure — from the network to the user level, and everywhere in between.”

According to industry analyst firm Forrester Research, Internet attacks are shifting from the network to software and web applications. The firm noted: ”Cyber attacks have moved up from the network layer to the application layer. Applications, especially web applications, have become prime targets for attackers because they create, present, modify, and store sensitive data, from credit card numbers to intellectual property.” (Forrester, ”Five Trends That Will Shape The IT Security Profession In 2008,” By Jonathan Penn with Tom Pohlmann, Paul Stamp and Allison Herald, Dec. 28, 2007.)

By outsourcing log management infrastructure to Verizon Business, it is believed that customers can better protect their global operations against security threats. The managed service includes automated collection, correlation, analysis of current and historical data, comprehensive reporting, secure archiving, and retrieval of application log data such as audit records and user activity logs.

Using advanced correlation and classification of logged security data, Verizon Business’ team of security experts can filter out real threats and, when necessary, react quickly to neutralize potential threats and attacks against customers. A key feature of the service is that it allows organizations to maintain the proper IT controls and reporting requirements needed to help them address industry standards and security regulations such as the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), COBIT 4.0, Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) and ISO 17799.

Best practice IT frameworks dictate that organizations collect, periodically review and securely archive their security log data for a defined period of time. Additionally, the ability to archive log data provides customers with secure, scalable storage and fast access to log data on the customer premises, which helps to facilitate quicker security audits.

Verizon Business’ comprehensive Managed Security Services portfolio is designed to provide security monitoring and management of premises-, cloud- and Software as a Service (SAAS)-based solutions to protect the extended enterprise. Verizon Business MSS uniquely complements an organization’s in-house capabilities with round-the-clock analysis and expertise. Enterprises and government agencies rely on Verizon Business to help them manage security risk and protect critical company assets.

Verizon Business Security Solutions offers a comprehensive portfolio of security services that include threat and vulnerability management; identity management; security and compliance programs; and security strategy and consultation. The more than 1,100 security professionals around the globe deliver these offerings through a range of managed services, professional services and products.

Verizon Business, one of the largest providers of communications services to the U.S. federal government, serves virtually every federal agency. Verizon Business is one of the largest global providers of advanced data, Internet and voice communications services. Verizon Business offers local-to-global-to-local network capabilities coupled with a broad range of telecommunications products and services, including managed network services and systems integration, to all levels of government.
