Florham Park, New Jersey – [Hosting Headlines] – Global Crossing, an IP solutions provider, has indicated that it will open a hosting data center in London to serve customers in Europe, as well as having relocated its data center operations in Miami.

In addition, the company has also created a new executive position to oversee its hosting strategic initiative. Gabriel del Campo, who currently manages the company’s incumbent data center business in Latin America, will serve as Global Crossing’s new vice president of data center services EMEA and global data center product management.

John Legere, Chief Executive Officer, Global Crossing noted, ”When we completed our acquisition of Impsat roughly a year ago, we emphasized the close alignment of our two businesses, and in particular, the opportunity to introduce existing Impsat services to a wider, global customer base. Our existing hosting infrastructure is world class. This expansion aims to capitalize on the rising demand for data center services, where supply has become increasingly scarce across Europe, and to accommodate the needs of U.S. businesses seeking connectivity to the Latin American region. It’s imperative to Global Crossing’s customers that we enhance and expand this valuable capability.”

Anthony Christie, Managing Director, EMEA remarked, ”Delivering this capability to enterprise customers in Europe beginning with our London facility is a cornerstone of our strategy to support their critical business needs. As we hone our focus on this crucial market segment, we’ll continue to refine this strategic growth area and to firmly plant Global Crossing in the minds of existing and prospective customers.”

According to Gartner, the world’s leading information technology research and advisory company, if significant new data center space is not brought on-stream in high-demand areas like London, there will be no free space left by the end of the decade.

Scott Morrison, Research Director at Gartner revealed, ”The general improvement in business conditions is causing organizations to come back to the data center market with greater overall demand than has been seen in recent years. The increase in demand for data center services is being driven primarily by internal enterprise requirements, including the growth in content-rich applications, data storage needs and virtualization. These are more robust indicators for positive mid-term growth in the industry than the supply-led expansion of web-facing solutions in the dot-com era.”

Consolidating our data center services with our Miami operations offers expanded physical facilities and enhances services provided to customers previously served out of a former Impsat facility in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The 650-square meter upgraded data center boasts a world-class infrastructure and quality standards, including state-of-the-art secure client support, such as a redundant power system for generators, rectifiers, UPS and air conditioning.

Under Mr. del Campo’s leadership, the Latin American team built Impsat’s existing successful data center business from the ground up. In addition to his other responsibilities, he will guide the development of common standards, best practices and processes to support the evolution of what has been a regional business into a global one.

Mr. del Campo explained, ”Global Crossing’s hosting business is focused on addressing enterprises’ increasing demand for integrated Information Communications Technology (ICT) solutions. Our emphasis is on solutions. We recognize the enterprise market’s need for converged services that go beyond data, video and voice integration, to integrate and combine IT services with telecommunications, Internet, security and VoIP.”

Global Crossing’s growing data center footprint currently offers world-class facilities in 60 major cities worldwide to provide businesses access to critical customers and business partners. Global Crossing housing facilities allow customers to seamlessly link sites to virtually any location around the world within the reach and capacity of the world’s most extensive global IP network.

The benefits of Global Crossing colocation facilities also include receiving consistent and similar services throughout the world and the ease of one-stop shopping for ICT, On-Demand and Continuity solutions. Global Crossing offers solutions that allow customers to focus on their businesses while Global Crossing manages and administers the entire IT infrastructure and network for them.

Global Crossing’s hosting solutions provide customers housing, equipment, storage, backup and monitoring, as well as managed services that free them to run their application or web site. On-Demand Solutions let customers use what they need when they need it, including network capacity, storage, processing power and managed services. They enable customers to respond rapidly and adequately to the demands of their clients or other business opportunities.

Global Crossing Continuity Solutions provide preventive tools and redundancy capabilities that keep businesses running or help minimize any potential economic losses caused by an unexpected incident. Interruptions in service could be caused by natural disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes, or floods, or by social problems, fires or technology problems. Several of Global Crossing’s data centers in Latin America have received a Statement on Auditing Standards (SAS) 70 review, which is a widely recognized auditing standard that evaluates the design and operating effectiveness of controls that have specific objectives, such as the security of financial information.

This review is especially important to large businesses and is being increasingly accepted by government organizations and private companies that seek an independent opinion to confirm the effectiveness of a provider’s processes and internal controls structure. It also simplifies their auditing processes and potentially can save them time and reduce their costs.

Global Crossing (Nasdaq: GLBC) provides telecommunications solutions over the world’s first integrated global IP-based network. Its core network connects approximately 390 cities in more than 30 countries worldwide, and delivers services to approximately 690 cities in more than 60 countries and 6 continents around the globe. The company’s global sales and support model matches the network footprint and, like the network, delivers a consistent customer experience worldwide. Global Crossing IP services are global in scale, linking the world’s enterprises, governments and carriers with customers, employees and partners worldwide in a secure environment that is ideally suited for IP-based business applications, allowing e-commerce to thrive. The company offers a full range of data, voice and security products to approximately 40 percent of the Fortune 500, as well as 700 carriers, mobile operators and ISPs. Its Professional Services and Managed Solutions provide VoIP, security and network consulting and management services to support its Global Crossing IP VPN service and Global Crossing VoIP services. Global Crossing was the first global communications provider with IPv6 natively deployed in both its private and public backbone networks.

Shelburne, Nova Scotia – [Hosting Headlines] – EIRCA Ltd., a H-Sphere cluster hosting provider, has expanded its geographically clustered services core, to a third Washington D.C. datacenter.

The move comes as a result of the recent announcement of an exclusive agreement with Softlayer Technologies, which saw the two companies form a long-term mutually beneficial partnership. The third datacenter is located just 7 miles from Dulles International Airport in a facility designed to full Tier IV standards. It features multiple redundant power connections in addition to the three 2-megawatt generators and eight, fully redundant, 750 kVA UPS systems.

The completion of the third datacenter was also accompanied by a new addition to the company’s Geographically Clustered Service, specifically targeted toward the company’s large reseller hosting client base. Simon O’Rourke, CEO of EIRCA Ltd. noted, ”With the three enterprise datacenters being so geographically diverse, it gives our clients a massive advantage over their respective competitors’ clients can designate a specific account or domain to the datacenter that best suits their needs.”

The expanded cluster also introduces geographically diverse DNS, mail, and database servers to accompany the company’s Windows and Linux file servers. The introduction of the Geographically Clustered Services, and the recently announced partnership with Softlayer Technologies, has seen a dramatic increase in sales for the company.

Mr. O’Rourke added, ”Sales conversion is up 72% on the last quarter, with customer retention hitting an all-time best at slightly under 99% retention, according to our research, that is due largely in part to the recent partnership with Softlayer Technologies which allows us to expand our reach and deliver next-generation web hosting across a geographically diverse network.”

The mission of establishing EIRCA Ltd. has been premium technical support and complete automation. The company is best known for its specific dedication to clustered web hosting on the H-Sphere platform.

Rob Conley, CEO of ResellerChoice noted, ”Our customers demanded a east coast location and we selected to expand in Peer1 NYC due to the low latency and zero packet loss and fastest possible routes for data.

Dallas, Texas – [Hosting Headlines] – SoftLayer, an on-demand hosting services and virtual data center provider for the small to medium enterprise (SME), has opened a new data center location in the Washington D.C. area.

The addition of this facility increases the company’s total capacity to 45,000 servers throughout their facilities located in Dallas, Seattle, and now D.C.

Lance Crosby, CEO of SoftLayer noted, ”Now with three geographically diverse data centers, we will bring even more new services to our customers in the coming months. As we searched for the best site for expanding our presence to the East Coast, the D.C. area was an easy choice. It has one of the highest concentrations of fiber connectivity in the U.S., providing us and our customers multiple network options and world class performance.”

SoftLayer Washington D.C. is located just 7 miles from Dulles International Airport in a facility designed to full Tier IV standards. It features multiple redundant power connections in addition to the three 2-megawatt generators and eight, fully redundant, 750 kVA UPS systems. As with all SoftLayer data centers, the facility has 24×7 onsite support and multiple security protocols controlling entrance to the building. In addition, the facility boasts infrastructure features including:

34 x 480v 3-Phase PDUs

Redundant 30-ton CRAC Units

FM-200 Fire Suppression System with VESDA

Biometric Security System

Digital Security Video Surveillance

SoftLayer has already begun pre-selling servers in the new data center to current customers, receiving an unprecedented level of demand resulting in a high backlog of server requests. Mr. Crosby added, ”We knew interest in the new location would be high, from both existing and new customers. We wanted to give our current customers an opportunity to request servers here and meet their demand prior to opening sales to the general market.”

Headquartered in Plano, Texas, SoftLayer provides next-generation web hosting and on-demand datacenter services on a global basis from facilities located in Dallas, TX and Seattle, WA. Utilizing proprietary management tools coupled with the industry’s first network-within-a-network topology, the company delivers unprecedented power and control to securely manage IT environments while providing unparalleled scalability.

San Francisco, California – [Hosting Headlines] – Digital Realty Trust, Inc., an owner and manager of corporate datacenters and Internet gateways, has issued a new research study indicating that green movement will grow in importance for datacentre providers.

The Digital Realty Trust survey also finds that vendors need to articulate green datacenter strategies in the next 24 months. ”How Green is Green?” focused on determining the depth of the Green movement in the European datacentre market. The release of this data follows the publication of a parallel study of the North American datacentre market. This European study is based on a recent poll of senior decision makers who are leaders in datacentres or influence significant decisions related to datacentre operations at large European companies.

The surveyed companies come from a wide range of industries, a quarter of which are from financial related services. Key findings from the research study and additional data points are provided below: — 60 per cent of respondents have a declared green strategy. — Firms with green strategy are largely holistic in nature and think their strategy must include both the facility as well as the equipment operating within it. — Datacentre carbon footprints are a key area of concern: over 60 per cent of respondents include the purchase of carbon credits in their overall green strategy. — Less than 50 per cent of respondents require vendors to have a green strategy. — Less than 35 per cent of survey participants know of a datacentre partner with a declared green strategy. The lack of clear vendor strategies leads to leniency. — The need for vendors to articulate a green strategy will only continue to grow in the next 13 to 24 months: over 60 per cent or respondents indicate that this need will continue to increase within the next two years.

Jim Smith, Vice President of Engineering at Digital Realty Trust noted, ”At the same time that we conducted this survey of European companies, we did a study of green datacentre trends in North America. There are some interesting findings that I believe have relevance to the European market. The North American survey indicates that forward momentum of green datacentre initiatives has stalled or even lost ground. The primary culprit appears to be the lack of clear industry standards for green datacentres. European companies expressed similar concern about the lack of clear, practical industry standards, and that could be a harbinger of a similar green ’slowdown’ in Europe. Companies are looking to the datacentre industry for leadership and clarity on how to define, design and operate a green datacentre. The industry must make this a key focus this year.”

A number of additional findings from the research study are as follows: — Respondents feel that there are many potential standards bodies to choose from but there is still no clear leader. The key factor for this is that the definition of Green is not universally adopted. — No clear definition of ‘Green’ exists and multiple components are currently viewed as green. At the moment survey participants feel that coalescence is required around a defined set of principles. Almost 70 per cent see efficient power usage as the ‘greenest’ component. — Being ”Green” will become an essential selection criteria for vendors within the next 24 months: almost 70 per cent of respondents indicated that this will be an important selection criteria in the next 24 months. — Green Strategy is expected to grow as a requirement for vendors in the next 12 to 24 months, forcing datacentre firms to articulate and clarify their green strategies.

Mr. Smith continued, ”Digital Realty Trust takes great pride in being an industry leader in green datacentre design and operations. We are also committed to supporting industry-wide initiatives to increase datacentre efficiency. One of the key ways we are doing this is by sharing energy efficiency data. We are the first company in the datacentre industry to do so, in response to customers and other end-user organizations who are seeking data and benchmarks that educate them about the energy efficiency of competing facilities and about how their datacentre can support their corporate green strategy.”

Mr. Smith added, ”We are also supporting industry-wide green datacentre initiatives by continuing to be an active member of The Green Grid, which is doing excellent work establishing standards and best practices for datacentre energy efficiency. We will continue to be a leader in applying LEED and BREEAM specifications to our building design and operations. Although these specifications are not designed specifically for datacentres, they have tremendous value for institutional building owners like Digital Realty Trust. These specifications provide a holistic view of how buildings impact our environment and a proven methodology for minimizing that impact.”

Digital Realty Trust will also hosted a webinar about the results of the green datacentre trend studies. The Webinar was conducted by Bernard Geohegan, Vice President, Europe, who provided additional data and analysis of the trends.

The Methodology Metrics reported in this study are based on web-based surveys of IT decision makers at large corporations in five European countries: the U.K., Germany, France, the Netherlands and Ireland. Almost 100 per cent of all surveyed companies have annual revenues greater than 1 billion Euros. 69 per cent of them have 5000 or more employees worldwide and 52 per cent over 7500. All surveyed organisations are ”leaders” in setting industry direction based on expense related to datacentre design and construction. Approximately 60 per cent of the respondents were Managing Directors and almost 13 per cent are ”C” level executives. The survey was conducted in March 2008.

Digital Realty Trust, Inc. owns, acquires, redevelops, develops and manages technology-related real estate. The Company is focused on providing Turn-Key Datacentre and Powered Base Building datacentre solutions for domestic and international tenants across a variety of industry verticals ranging from information technology and internet enterprises, to manufacturing and financial services. Digital Realty Trust’s 71 properties, excluding one property held as an investment in an unconsolidated joint venture, contain applications and operations critical to the day-to-day operations of technology industry tenants and corporate enterprise datacentre tenants. Comprising approximately 1.2 million rentable square metres (12.6 million square feet) as of April 1, 2008, including 186,000 square metres (2 million square feet) of space held for redevelopment, Digital Realty Trust’s portfolio is located in 26 markets throughout Europe and North America.

Austin, Texas – [Hosting Headlines] – Over 50 percent of the participants report they are consolidating all email servers into a single data center in one geographic location., according to a new study released by Osterman Research and sponsored by security solutions company, Neverfail.

The report indicates that, even amidst today’s enlightened business environments, many companies are still leaving their data centers open to severe risk. Yet less than 1 percent says they are protecting these systems with redundant servers in case of disaster — leaving most at risk of losing data and severely compromising their business.

Encouragingly, the report also found that two-thirds of these companies consider disaster recovery and business continuity an important or critical driver for the adoption of virtualization technology, second only to reducing hardware costs. Regardless of the data center environment, the ubiquity of email use to communicate and exchange business-critical content makes it one of the most important business applications — one that simply can not go down.

Other interesting facts from the survey and other recent Osterman Research surveys:
– Nearly three out of five organizations consider enabling continuous operations as an important or critical driver for adopting virtualization. — However, most decision makers do not understand virtualization well enough to make sound decisions about its adoption. — Messaging system reliability/uptime is a serious problem for one in five organizations, impacting millions of users in the workplace. Despite this, 3 out of 4 respondents did not see messaging as an important part of their virtualization project. These companies, therefore, must look to alternative technologies to provide business continuity and disaster recovery.

Michael Osterman, President of Osterman Research noted, ”We were quite surprised to find so many businesses relying on ‘luck’ and still thinking about next steps when considering business continuity for their most important applications. It was no surprise that more than half of respondents are planning to put together a virtual environment to address the problem. But what was interesting was the lack of understanding of virtualization amongst the decision makers. It is clear that where a company is building out their business continuity plans there is a need for better integration and understanding of virtualization to deliver continuous availability to prevent any type of business interruption.”

Andrew Barnes, Senior Vice President of corporate development at Neverfail remarked, ”Virtualization is experiencing rapid market growth because of its ability to improve efficiency in data centers through cost savings and resource management. It is good to see that virtualization vendors are now waking companies up to the urgent need for business continuity and disaster recovery. Clearly though there is some way to go for companies to understand how virtualization can be best implemented to protect critical parts of the business.”

With global experience in delivering continuous availability solutions for mission critical applications, Neverfail has experience across physical and virtual infrastructures. As well as protecting critical applications such as email and mobility platforms, Neverfail protects VMware VirtualCenter which sits at the heart of the market leading virtualization platform.

VMware VirtualCenter provides centralized monitoring, remote management, and rapid provisioning capabilities, and serves as the control point for valuable services such as VMware VMotion, Site Recovery Manager and VMware Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS). This functionality yields significant benefits including increased efficiency and flexibility — provided that VMware VirtualCenter Server can be accessed by an IT administrator. Neverfail for VMware VirtualCenter ensures that IT administrators will not lose access to the features provided by VMware VirtualCenter despite IT interruptions ranging from component failure to external interruptions.

Mr. Barnes added, ”Neverfail customers today blend physical and virtual environments to minimize the time to protect their most critical applications as part of their business continuity and recovery plans. Using virtualization technology in conjunction with Neverfail provides the maximum level of application availability and accelerates the value of virtualization to deliver continuous availability.”

In addition to protecting virtualized environments, Neverfail also offers solutions for a wide range of Windows-based applications including Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint, SQL Server, File Server and IIS, as well as RIM BlackBerr and IBM Lotus Domino. Neverfail’s products can be implemented in physical and virtual environments and over a LAN or WAN which offers businesses the ability to locate their secondary server in the next room or across the globe. Neverfail’s virtualized offerings are now available through more than 850 channel partners and distributors or direct.

Neverfail is a global software company providing data protection, high availability, and disaster recovery solutions focused on keeping users productive. Neverfail’s software solutions enable users to remain continuously connected to the live software application irrespective of hardware, software, operating system, or network failures. Neverfail’s mission of eliminating application downtime for the end user delivers the assurance of business continuity, removes the commercial and IT management costs associated with system downtime and enables the more productive use of IT resources.
