Climate Neutral Data Center for Hosting.com

San Francisco, California – [Hosting Headlines] – Managed hosting and colocation company, Hosting.com, has adopted a climate neutral initiative, in its San Francisco data center, projecting that the amount of carbon it will be neutralizing is the equivalent of not burning 260,000 gallons of gasoline a year.

Data centers in the United States utilize between 1% and 2% of all power consumption, and some experts believe that this percentage will rise dramatically in the future with the growing number of data centers due to the expansion of the Internet as a means to delivering content, software and services. Given the relatively small number of data centers in the country and their large power consumption requirements, Hosting.com is urging legislators and business leaders to evaluate energy consumption sources for data centers and implement some of the easy, practical steps that are available today to reduce carbon emissions.

Darren King, President and CEO of Hosting.com noted, ”One of our major corporate responsibility initiatives for 2008 is environmentally friendly energy use. We believe all companies have an obligation to protect our environment with proactive measures today rather than sitting around and debating whether global warming has or has not happened. Green power is readily available today, and large power consumers like data center providers owe it to themselves and future generations to explore these opportunities to make positive change.”

In addition to pursuing green initiatives in Hosting.com’s data centers through the use of green power, energy efficient data center design, and enterprise virtualization solutions, Hosting.com pays for climate neutrality for the homes of all of its employees.

Hosting.com’s San Francisco facility is located in downtown San Francisco, just a few blocks from AT and T Park. This state-of-the-art data center offers managed colocation hosting solutions as well as additional redundancy, disaster recovery, and business continuance solutions to Hosting.com’s global customer base.

In addition, Hosting.com attained SAS 70 Type II certification for its Irvine, California and Louisville, Kentucky locations. Its newest datacenter located in San Francisco, California also became certified, making all three of Hosting.com’s primary datacenters SAS 70 Type II compliant. The SAS 70 audit, or Statement on Auditing Standards (”SAS”) No. 70, was developed by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) as a means of measuring and reporting the effectiveness of operations and controls of a service provider. Hosting.com’s SAS 70 audit was conducted by independent auditor Chilton and Medley.

The SAS 70 auditing format enables Hosting.com to communicate details on internal operations and security precautions to customers in an industry accepted format, complete with Chilton and Medley’s thorough testing and assessment of each of the controls. By carrying the SAS 70 Type II certification, customers have assurance that each of Hosting.com’s primary datacenters consistently demonstrates the same high standard of operation, security, and ethics.
